New Drawings from Prison by Roger Rice

We also have a selection of new drawings by Roger Rice, an African American fundamentalist preacher serving a life-sentence in Mississippi.  His work continues to focus on Biblical and socio-political themes.  Several examples of his most recent drawings from 2005 are found on our Current Show page, including "Katrina Sings the Blues"-- a reflection on the New Orleans hurricane disaster.  For oil paintings and additional drawings, see the listing for Roger Rice on our Gallery page.

Roger Rice (b. 1958), a Mississippi born African-American ordained fundamentalist preacher, is a visionary artist in the true sense of the word.   Since 1994, Rice has been serving a life sentence in the Mississippi penal system.   From 1987 until his incarceration, he painted 42 works in oil on canvas, of which about 25 remain.  He is no longer allowed to work in oils, but rather is restricted to creating works on paper in colored pencil.

In 2005, the gallery received fifteen new drawings, including these shown below.  See our Roger Rice webpage for more information and examples of both his oil paintings and his drawings from prison.
