Erma "Junior" Lewis  (1948-1999)

Junior Lewis, a Kentucky tobacco farmer, began carving around 1987 when he first created an Indian head and a devil head made out of blocks of wood.  Using a chain saw, he would rough out the wood, which he then finished carving and sanding by hand.  Much of his work was painted, although occasionally he left pieces unpainted.  In addition to his various devil figures,  Lewis carved biblical scenes, animals from eastern Kentucky, lions and tigers, small dogs, and a mother pig with babies.
