Sam Martin, Sr.  (1926 - 1998)

Sam Martin was a third-generation carver from an Alabama coal-mining family.  He used a pocket knife to carve his walking canes and small animals out of sourwood, bay, maple, and various other woods.  To finish the pieces, he sanded them smooth and then applied a coat of paste wax, giving the work the appearance of antique ivory.
