Myrtice West (1924 - 2010) Alabama artist Myrtice West died on April 12, 2010, at the age of 86. Her personal life had been full of difficulties and trials, but her art became her salvation and her testimony to the world. A deeply religious woman, she began painting in 1952 after her second miscarriage, at which point she said all she wanted to do was to lie on the floor of her house and paint Jesus. She experienced divine inspiration to create art from then on. West is perhaps best known for a series of 13 large, visionary paintings based on the Book of Revelation. See the excellent book entitled Wonders to Behold, based on that series of paintings. Over the years, Myrtice West was a regular
participant in the nationally popular
Kentuck Festival of the Arts held annually in
Northport, Alabama. For more of her story, see
her recent obituary.
